One future, Pluribus pasts

We, Pluribus One

All the founders of Pluribus One have been doing research on pattern recognition for many years. The name and the slogan of the company are a tribute to one of the fathers of the science & technology of pattern recognition: Satosi Watanabe.

Watanabe defined pattern recognition as “seeing one in many”, namely, the capability of recognizing the unity (One) in the multiplicity (Pluribus), the capability of recognizing one face in a huge collection of pixels or recognizing the concept of tree despite the huge variety of sizes, shapes, and colours of the different individualities.

Seeing, surviving, making sense

Many species of living beings recognize effortless regularities, complex patterns, in the multiplicity of sounds, images, stimula, captured by their sense organs. Surviving would not be possible without such a capability.

Without the capability of “seeing one in many”, the natural and artificial beings, the machines we design, are condemned to live in chaos. Indeed, common sense laws and nature laws emerge from “seeing one in many”.

Making sense of the world in a future will be possible only for machines that are capable of seeing one in many.
